We May Be Entering a Second Axial Age

Many of our readers will be familiar with Otto Sharmer. He has been a leading figure in systems change thinking for decades, and his work is well known world-wide.

In this recently published article for Noema magazine, it is refreshing to hear Sharmer speaking out, in perhaps his most direct response yet to the challenge of our global ontological crisis. As in his work generally, Sharmer attributes his upbringing on a biodynamic farm in northern Germany as formative to his understanding that the quality of what grows above the ground (the social soil), depends on the quality of the soil beneath it.”

Although the possibility of humanity entering a new axial-age, is not a new idea, we appreciate the way in which Sharmer has articulated it in this essay. He describes the degradation of our form of knowing, and how the emergence of AI offers us a mirror in which to see ourselves—a rupture that “demands a reordering of the structure of consciousness,” something that we ourselves at 3rd Space believe, and are attempting to articulate in different ways, on this website.

Publishing this article also enables us to share with our readers Noema magazine itself, an excellent source for current critical writing in response to the world reality.

Enjoy!
